Willoughby State Forest |
October 3rd, 2020 27.34 miles 8,632 feet This is my first patch and a made-up challenge. I didn not know about the Northeast Kingdom Mountain Challenge at this point, and Emma and I wanted a patch for hiking the six peaks of Willoughby State Forest, so we ran to Walmart, got a cross-stitch kid, and here we are! |
Blue Hills Skyliner | October 18th, 2020 7.86 miles 1,680 feet A relatively easy patch to earn, Gen and I hiked the entirety of the Skyline Trail in the Blue Hills! A very fun hike with a few moderate steeps scattered about.
West Quoddy Head State Park | June 29th, 2021 5.00 miles 420 feet This is the first existing patch I "earned" for a challenge that I made up. During a trip to Acadia National Park, I drove a couple hours northeast to West Quoddy Head State Park and hiked all of the trails. When I noticed the gift shop had a patch, I had to get it!
New Hampshire Fire Tower Quest | February 19th, 2022 This is a list put out by the state of their working fire towers, and the patch program requires hiking five of them - easy enough! I hiked Pawtuckaway, Magalloway, Federal Hill, Warner Hill, and Pack Monadnock. As of 3/13/2024, I am still slowly working my way through the remainder on this list.
Toilet Paper Trio - Winter | March 5th, 2022 This list was created during the pandemic, paying homage to the infamous toilet paper shortage. The goal is to hike three local hikes in winter. I added a caveat that the hikes couldn't double for any other challenges. |
Toilet Paper Trio | March 23rd, 2022 Same as above, but in any season! |
Cape Cod National Seashore | March 27th, 2022 19.10 miles 1,004 feet Another challenge that I found a patch for and then created a challenge - hike all of the trails on the Cape Cod National Seashore! |
Blue Hills 125 Mile Club | June 2nd, 2022 190.14 miles 21,674 feet My biggest challenge accomplishment to date - hiking all of the trails in the Blue Hills Reservation! I really enjoyed this challenge as it got me to explore the park more, and gave me a physical challenge and motivation to hike after shcool. |
Hike for Ukraine | June 7th, 2022 This was a one-off fundraiser made by the same people who made the Toilet Paper Trio challenges. |
Wachusett Mountain Redline | June 14th, 2022 18.81 miles 4,475 feet Hiking all the trails on Mt. Wachusett! I really enjoyed this challenge - finsihed in three hikes. Trails range from steep, rugged climbs to easy walks in the woods. Hosted in the Wachusett Hikers Facebook group. |
Acadia Ascents | June 29th, 2022 46.16 miles 13,218 feet One of my favorite challenges to date! Climbing all 26 original peaks of Acadia National Park. I split this into two visits, with the second visit being the beefier (19 peaks). All of the mountains were beautiful and had their own character. Hosted by a member of the Maine Hiking Facebook group. |
New Jersey Appalachian Trail | August 1st, 2022 126.87 miles 17,102 feet See a patch, make a challenge - I section/day-hiked the Appalachian Trail in New Jersey, with hikes dating back to high school. This one was really fun as it acted like a big "connect the dots" game. New Jersey is beautiful! |
Catskill Fire Towers | August 10th, 2022 26.54 miles 8,039 feet Another fun one - not an official challenge, but the patch existed! The views from Overlook mountain were incredible. There is also the yearly Catskill Fire Tower Challenge hosted by NYSDEC, but I did this over the course of two years. |
Fulton Chain Trifecta | August 10th, 2022 8.25 miles 1,673 feet A fun, easy challenge deep in the Adirondacks. Three easy peaks with stunning views. Also my first trip to the ADK! |
Tupper Lake Triad | August 11th, 2022 7.90 miles 1,886 feet Another fun, easy challenge deep in the Adirondacks. Three more easy peaks with stunning views. |
Belknap Range Hiker | August 25th, 2022 26.19 miles 19,346 feet Another lovely challenge, this time in the Belknap Range of NH. 12 peaks in all. I finished in three hikes over the course of four days (not including my innaugural trip to Mt. Major in 2020). They also have a redlining patch and a grid patch for this range, so I will most like be back! |
Go North 9er | August 29th, 2022 35.49 miles 11.916 feet The final patch of my busy, busy August! This challenge encompasses 9 peaks in the remote Great North Woods of VT/NH. Some double-dipping with the 52 With-a-View and Northeast Kingdom Mountain Challenge. I found it really fun to hit these peaks that were truly in the middle of nowhere (looking at you, Magalloway and Gore). |
52 Hike Challenge (2022) | December 29th, 2022 Basically an accountability challenge - I knew I would likely hike more than 52 hikes in 2022 (which I did), but my goal with this challenge was to do at least four hikes a month to keep myself consistent. I fell off the wagon a bit in November, but got right back on for December! |
[NO PATCH] | Operation Alaska Benchmark Challenge - Bronze | January 4th, 2023 This is a cool challenge that focuses on finding 25 summit/triangulation benchmarks, but sadly the host of the challenge doesn't seem to be sending out bronze patches anymore. Maybe someday someone will take over the challenge for him. |
Sunset Six | April 3rd, 2023 Hosted by the same people who run the Toilet Paper Trio challenge, this patch is awarded after six sunset hikes. My after-school Blue Hills hikes made up the bulk of these, and I just loved how it got me to watch more sunsets. Doing it at the Blue Hills was nice, too, since I could watch the sun set and then make it down before I needed a headlamp. |
Wachusett Trail Tracer | April 9th, 2023 20.35 miles 4,675 feet The host of the Watchsett Redline patch changed the name and patch design of his challenge, so naturally I had to do it again! It was fun to see the mountain for a second round, this time with more winter conditions. |
Old Rag Mountain | April 20th, 2023 A commemorative patch for a single hike in Shenandoah National Park. This was a fun one! Some of the most intense scrambling I've ever done. |
Summit Beer Society | August 28th, 2023 A very fun, silly challenge. Have a summit beverage on 24 different summits! I was happy to complete this one. |
Northeast Kingdom Mounatin Challenge | September 4th, 2023 78.59 miles 22,063 feet A lovely supplement to my very first, homemade patch. 20 mountains in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, ranging from very easy to very difficult (with a couple treks through dreadful mud). I loved this challenge for the same reason I loved the Go North 9er challenge - it really got me out to areas I would truly never have gone otherwise. Hosted by the Northwoods Stewardship Center. |
Monadnock Redliner | September 14th, 2023 68.02 miles 20,37 feet A beautiful patch for hiking all of the trails on my favorite mountain! I adored every single hike, which really hit every kind of weather condition. |
52 Hike Challenge (2023) | December 29th, 2023 Same as last year, but I did not fall off the bandwagon in November - yay! |
[NO PATCH] | Blue Hills Reservation 500 Miles | January 21st, 2024 A challenge I made up for myself to hike 500 miles in the Blue Hills. Kind of double-dipping with the trail tracing challenges, but also a fun way to track hikes in the reservation that "don't count for anything." Working on designing a patch either for myself or to publish and form an official challenge. |
Blue Hills 125 Mile Club (2nd Round) | February 3rd, 2024 172.08 miles 19,976 feet My second round of hiking all the trails in the Blue Hills Reservation! The Friends of the Blue Hills announced they were releasing a sequel patch for those who hiked the trails twice (same patch but with a red outline now), so I had to jump on it! |
Blue Hills Winter Trace | March 11th, 2024 168.78 miles 19,089 feet I also worked on hiking all of the trails in the winter months of 2023 and 2024. None of these hikes double-dipped with the 125-Mile Club challenges, making this three complete sets of tracing the trails in the Blue Hills!
Sunrise Six | April 16th, 2024 This was a very fun challenge as it really got me out of my comfort zone, especially with my final two sunrsie hikes of Mt. Watatic and Pack Monadnock. With only six peaks, it was not a highly intensive challenge. I am still scared of the dark, but now I am less scared!
Castle in the Clouds Hiker Achievement | April 18th, 2024 47.44 miles 8,475 feet Another redlining/tracing challenge complete! The trails in the Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area are mostly old roads with many, winding switchbacks. The five peaks all boast lovely views, and the Brook Walk is not to be missed!
Wapack Trail | May 12th, 2024 46.74 miles 9,256 feet The Wapack Trail is a 21.5-mile hiking trail that connects Mts. Watatic and North Pack Monadnock (Wa-Pack). I was avoding the White Mountains due to an ever-lasting snowpack and mud season, so I spent three days over my April vacation (and one a few weeks later) connecting the dots in four seperate out-and-back hikes.
